Current Projects

Wonder’neath runs projects beyond its core programs, Art Bikers, Open Studio and the Studio Artist Program, often in partnership with other organizations. Projects are sometimes ongoing long-term projects and others are short-term projects based on funding, others are partnership programs, and some we are the host organization that provides space or funding for others.

ANNIE MAE PICTOU LEGACY MURAL

These white people think this country belongs to them—they don’t realize that they are only in charge right now because there’s more of them than there are of us. The whole country changed with only a handful of raggedly-ass pilgrims that came over here in the 1500s. And it can take a handful of raggedy-ass Indians to do the same, and I intend to be one of those raggedy-ass Indians.

— Annie Mae Pictou, 1945-1975

Artist: Tayla Paul

Project Lead: Rebecca Moore, in consultation with Denise Pictou Maloney (daughter of Annie Mae Pictou)

Created between July 2022 and July 2023.

Located at 2576 Agricola Street, Kjiputuk(Halifax)- North side facing the parking lot

Acrylic Paint on Marine Grade Plywood, 12’w x 16’h

The Annie Mae Pictou Legacy Mural honours the memory and legacy of Annie Mae Pictou, a Mi'kmaw mother, an internationally accomplished educator and activist from Sipekne’katik First Nation who was murdered in South Dakota in 1975. Her memory and legacy are still held very dear to the Mi'kmaq Nation today.

A Linktre QR code can be found on the signage next to the mural to enrich the telling of Annie Mae’s story. On the Linktre page, folks can explore links to learn about Annie Mae Pictou ,the final report from the National Inquiry into Missing and Murdered Indigenous Women and Girls,  other resources, as well as a link to a donation campaign.

We are accepting donations (charitable receipts can be provided) towards the regular maintenance of the mural, and continued education and enrichment about Annie Mae and her legacy, the mural process, and the activism work of Denise Pictou Maloney on Missing and Murdered Indigenous Women, Girls and 2-Spirit People (MMIWG2S+).
