Wonder’neath Art Society

2482 Maynard Street

2020-Present

Our neighbourhood is growing quickly, and with it, gentrification. It is important that in addition to being a productive space artistically, Wonder’neath serves as a meeting place. A place to find common ground and discuss differences. Open Studio and other programs offer the opportunity to gather through artmaking, and each session sees participants making meaningful connections with others. Feedback from participants indicates this programming eases social isolation, provides opportunities for intergenerational connection, and for a number of new immigrants, is one of the first places where they feel at home.  We strive to create a space where everyone can feel welcome.

Wonder’neath Art Society emerged from a history of artistic collaboration between founders Melissa Marr and Heather Wilkinson. In 2010, we began as an ad-hoc group recognizing a need for greater art opportunities for our community in North End Halifax. Since then, Wonder’neath has grown and evolved in response to passion and need, demonstrating leadership in the context of an active neighbourhood-based arts studio.

Initially established to provide affordable and stable studio space for practicing artists and to encourage cross-pollination across disciplines, Wonder’neath’s founders and a committed Board of Directors recognized the need to build bridges in the community between those who were passionate about the arts and those who felt alienated by them, exploring how we might shift the perception of who can be involved in the arts and how art might bring people together across differences.
